Water
I remember one day it was about 12 degrees, with a blustery South Westerly, and around 60mm of rain. The kindy that booked me was happy to go ahead. I was real happy they did. They went on the Bom site and watched the radar, and saw the clouds coming in over the ocean in real time. The group studied the giant black clouds rushing us. Heaps of kids were trying to guesstimate the travel time for the next downpour. When they rain came down, it came down hard, and it was ‘South Australian’ rain temperature (Bloody freezing!).
Kids who, until that day, showed a fear of getting wet in rain, were now, dancing under a busted downpipe, singing, drinking and laughing. The heavy rain created rivers to jump, block, chase, and redirect. Their frantic play resemble sea battered ship sailors being tossed by ocean serpents. Urgency in their cries of ” TIE DOWN THE ROPES! THE BIG STORM IS COMING!” . We definitely measured and quantified the world around us. Flow, Millimetres, Directions, Trajectories. All the good stuff.
However, my favourite learning for many that day was: Water is magnificent! It’s fresh embrace cleanses your being!
A rain storm has now wired this developing brain to connect rain storms with some of the most joyous experiences of their lives. So many of them shout out “THIS IS THE BEST DAY EVER!” Imagine linking a freezing, windy, relentless day, to deep feelings of a fanatical joy, laughter, and connection. That is but one story of water.
